Urgent Notice to Vegans and Vegetarians

Urgent Notice to Vegans and Vegetarians

Urgent Notice to Vegans and Vegetarians - Product Recall

  • Lush LIP SCRUBS dated before 20th July 2020 are NOT SUITABLE for Vegans and Vegetarians.

  • Any vegetarians or vegans who have one can bring it back to any Lush shop for a refund.

  • If you have purchased it online please contact us at custserv@lush.com.ph

  • All affected stock has been withdrawn from our shops. Only lip scrubs made in our Japan factory are affected.

  • Replacement stock will be made as soon as possible.

  • Any lip scrub products made after 27th July 2020 will be suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

We are hugely sorry and horrified to have to say that the sugar supplied to our Japanese factory that is used to make our lip scrubs does not meet vegetarian and vegan standards due to the use of bone char as part of the sugar refining process.

We are sincerely sorry for this mistake and feel that the most important thing now is for us to do everything possible to ensure that any vegetarians or vegans who currently have a lip scrub they have purchased from us are alerted so they know to stop using it.

The quality and safety of the lip scrubs is not affected by this, as the sugar is food-grade, however, because animal bone was used by the sugar manufacturer, it does not meet the vegan standards. In addition, it does not meet the standards we demand for our entirely vegetarian company and which our vegetarian and vegan customers also expect.

As a completely vegetarian company, we have many vegetarian and vegan staff and customers who share our pledge to never use animals ingredients or animal testing in our products.  So for Lush, for staff and customers and for the animals, we never, ever want to get things wrong and make a mistake like this. We therefore want to be completely open and let our vegetarian and vegan customers know not to use the product and to bring back any they have left.  We are offering refunds on any lip scrubs made before 21st July 2020.  Please bring your products or your receipt into a Lush shop for a refund, or email customer service if you purchased one online.

We have stopped all production of lip scrubs in our Japan factory and removed all stock from our shops. We have a new supply of sugar arriving that has not been processed with bone char and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans - and we will be using this new supplier from here onwards.  Once production starts again and we refill our shop shelves, all lip scrubs will be suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Living a vegetarian and vegan life is an ethical commitment, and it is one we understand because we share those same values.  We are therefore heartbroken to have made this error and to have breached those ethical commitments. We are deeply sorry and want you to know that we try to be vigilant at all times to ensure that no animal ingredients or animal testing is involved in our products and we constantly monitor our suppliers to ensure they meet our supplier codes and standards. We have reported the issue to our Ethical Auditors, so that they are aware of our error.  We have also contacted Vegetarian and Vegan organizations to let them know, so that the community is aware of the products that have been withdrawn.  Please note; this only affects products made in our Japan factory - all other lip scrubs were made with sugar suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Our hearts are heavy over this mistake because there is never any need for animals to be used in cosmetics; it has been our life’s work to build our Lush brand to prove this - and it will continue to be our mission. We thank you for being part of a cruelty free lifestyle and for shopping at Lush because you trust us to be part of that too. We hope that we can continue to serve you in the future and that we can retain your trust despite this mistake.
