Cocoa Absolute
Chocolatey and uplifting
Cocoa absolute is a very thick and dark brown liquid, originating from cocoa powder. It is used for its rich, dark chocolatey aroma, as well as its uplifting and aphrodisiac effect on the mind.
The cacao tree produces fruit in the form of dark red or brown pods. Each pod can yield up to 50 seeds, which are fermented to remove their bitterness. They are then cleaned, roasted and cracked to remove the hard shells. These 'cocoa nibs' are ground to a thick, oily paste called chocolate liquor that is then subjected to high pressure to separate the cocoa butter and cocoa powder.
Colombian Peace Community cocoa powder is distilled in France to make the Colombian cocoa absolute Lush purchases. The Communidad de Paz de San José de Apartadó in north-west Colombia is one of Lush's three Fair Trade cocoa butter suppliers. This group consists of roughly 2,100 farmers, all pledged to non-violence, who have developed ways of growing which incorporate permaculture techniques, such as mixed planting and composting, so they don’t need to buy pesticides and fertilisers.
Cocoa is called ‘the food of the gods’ referring to the multiple benefits of its beans. It is rich in flavonoids, the antioxidant components that we can find in a lot of fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are compounds made by plants to prevent premature breakdowns of their cells caused by exposure to atmospheric agents like air, heat and sunlight. These antioxidants benefit skin as well so they protect the skin from premature ageing.
