The origin of lemon is not known, but it can be found growing in Asia and East India and Italy. We use organic Sicilian lemons, wherever possible, and buy these from our supplier in Sicily. Citrus limonum is a thorny, evergreen tree with irregular branches bearing glistening, oval leaves.
Its flowers are white and pink-tinged and strongly perfumed, which become the lemon fruit. A lemon tree produces fruit every month of the year and its annual yield can be several thousand fruits.
Medicinally, lemon is used externally for eczema, stings and sore throats.
Lemon zest taken from fresh lemon peel is added to cakes, biscuits, desserts, and soups.
Dried lemon peel is used in pot-pourri.
Lemons are antibacterial, astringent and a mild antiseptic with a powerful cleansing action.
Lemon peel powder is made by grinding dried lemon peel down to a fine powder, which makes it ideal for use in a Bath Ballistic mix.
We used lemon peel powder in our Lush Pud Bath Ballistic to make it like an authentic Christmas pudding. The powdered peel also has a very mild cleansing action as it disperses in the water.
