Thyme Oil

Antiseptic and disinfectant

Thyme oil is obtained from the Thyme plant by steam distillation. The main constituents of the oil are thymol and carvacrol and it is often used as a disinfectant. It is well known for its antiseptic, bactericidal and carminative properties.

Description Thyme also acts as a natural tranquilizer as it contains carvacrol which has a tonic effect on the nerve centres. Thyme oil was traditionally used as an antiseptic, local anaesthetic and a deodorant. For this reason it is excellent in foot lotions, natural deodorant powders, soaps, and shower gels to keep our microflora (that’s good bacteria) under control, as well as banish the bacteria, yeasts and molds that we don’t want. It is said that that botanical name Thymus is connected with the Greek word thymon meaning to fumigate, and it has been used as air clearing incense in temples for centuries.Thyme is also excellent for the scalp and hair growth as it stimulates blood vessels which feed the roots of hair follicles. Thyme is a small, evergreen herb that grows low to the ground, up to a height of around 15 inches. It bears white to purple flowers. Whole plants and flowering tops are harvested as flowering commences. They are distilled for oil or dried for elixirs, liquid extracts and infusions (some infusions use fresh herb). Thyme is excellent for thriving ecosystems as it attracts bees.
