Agar agar is a powder, made from a gel-like mucilage that comes from a species of seaweed known as agarophytes. It softens and moisturises skin and hair and is incredibly rich in nutrients.
Description
Agarophytes are found in the seas of Japan, the Mediterranean, Europe, Africa and America. They have a tufted appearance from their fine fronds and their colours vary from pinks to deep reds and purples, camouflaging their chlorophyll.
To make agar agar, the seaweeds are collected and laid out on a beach, bleached and dried. The seaweed is then boiled in water and filtered to create a jelly, which is dried in the sunlight and prepared into bars, flakes or fine granules.
