Shea butter is a popular ingredient in creams and lotions because it is richly moisturising, gentle and easily absorbed by the skin.
Description
Shea nuts are dried and crushed before being roasted and pressed into a slick liquor. This is then whipped and kneaded, before the shea butter is skimmed from the top, creating an high quality ingredient. It contains oleic acid, a saturated fatty acid which is highly compatible with the sebum naturally produced by our skin, which means it's readily absorbed. By doing so, it is said to help the absorption of other active ingredients.
When used in it’s solid form, Shea Butter helps to naturally preserve some self preserving products as part of an expertly balanced formula. This is achieved by solid shea butter creating a tight emulsion that does not leave space for microbes to move around and grow. This reduces the amount of free water in the product, naturally keeping products fresh as well as delivering a range of benefits to the skin.
All Fair Trade shea butter used in Lush products is from a women’s cooperative in Ghana, where it is hand-processed using traditional methods. Lush also use some Organic shea butter from an alternative source.
