The apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca) is widely cultivated in the Northern Hemisphere. Thought to have originated In China and South East Asia, it then spread to Armenia and Europe. The tree came to England during the reign of King Henry VIII. Apricots are rich in beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant, and potassium, a mineral that supports the healthy function of the skin. It is difficult to obtain fresh apricots all year round, so it is prudent to use its dried form. The dried fruits contain even more beta-carotene (10.9IU) than the fresh fruit (2.6IU) per 100 grams and have an even higher concentration of potassium.
Myrrh is a resin produced by small sturdy trees. These grow to no more than 9 feet in height and inhabit the semi-desert regions of Yemen, Libya, and Iran. A yellow liquid is discharged and extracted naturally from cracks or cuts in the trunk. When this sets it resembles brownish-red pieces which are powdered ready to be added straight into products.
Myrrh is used for its fantastic antiseptic, astringent and skin soothing qualities; it also has a distinctive aroma making it popular in perfumery, giving a decadent spicy scent to our products. The anti-inflammatory power of Myrrh means it is used in modern pharmaceutical and dental preparations. It was used by the ancient Egyptians in religious rites and as a preservative in the mummification process.
