Beauty in Transition

Beauty in Transition

Transitioning is a journey as unique as each individual.

From medical to holistic transition, non-transition or dimensional experience, it's essential that we respect all personal needs.

We had the honor to sit down with London Layne (pronouns she/hers/them), a Trans educator, advocate and spokeswoman with almost 20 years of expertise and training in cosmetology, cosmetic chemistry, trichology, and dermatology. Besides her participation and advocacy with several organizations and movements, London forged a relationship with Lush in 2014. We were lucky enough to have her working with Charity Pot and other projects, ultimately leading to her amazing collaboration for the #TransRightsAreHumanRights campaign.

This year, London came back to walk us through some products and ingredients that can help in a holistic approach to transition, as well as aid in symptoms of dysphoria or medical transition.

Serve some face

Sometimes, transition can mean that hormone levels are all over the place! Because of this, the balance of the skin is disrupted and can become more alkaline than usual. Common things people can experience in transition are acne, loss of melanin and thinning of the dermis. These next products will help you clean, soothe, balance and moisturize your skin to keep it healthy and happy.

Ultraplant Facial Cleanser

Ultraplant is a rich vegan cream cleanser made with just seven simple ingredients to easily wipe away dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin. Jojoba oil and agave help to hydrate the skin on a deeper level, leaving it looking and feeling plump and dewy while orange blossom water calms both mind and skin with gentle and lovely scent.

Eau Roma Water Toner

Once your skin is clean, it's important to balance. Toners are beautiful waters and infusions that help create more balance within the skin. Think of it as not only your skin's daily reset button but as a way to create a good environment to help your skin get the best of all your next skincare products. Eau Roma Water’s pure simplicity of ingredients is perfect. Why? Rose water will not only soothe redness, but its natural refreshing properties can help you cool down during a hot flash—if you are experiencing those during hormonal transition.

Soothing moisturizers

Once your skin is cleansed and toned, you want to seal in all that goodness and make sure it is then soft and nurtured. A calming moisturizer like Cosmetic Lad, Celestial, or Skin Drink can keep the skin supple while providing needed calming ingredients like lavender, rose and vanilla.

Happy Skin Enzymic Facial Exfoliator

This vitamin C-rich scrub helps give you a healthy glow. Argan oil leaves skin feeling soft and supple, while the fresh pineapple and jackfruit juices make use of fruit enzymes to lift dead skin and leave a radiant finish. And enjoy a gentle, plastic-free polish from exfoliants like bamboo stem extract and tagua nut powder.

Cup O’ Coffee Face And Body Mask

Applying a weekly face mask is a great way to treat your skin. When it comes to stimulating your skin, a gentle exfoliator is just what you need in the morning (or anytime, really). Cup O´ Coffee’s brilliant balance of agave syrup, kaolin clay, and ground coffee is a perfect combination of moisturizing and detoxifying properties for the face and its changing needs, without irritating sensitive skin.

Dirty Shaving Cream

For people shaving their legs for the first time, it’s good to find a product that will be very soothing but will also be a great performer when it comes to having that perfectly-smooth shave. Dirty is a calming, herbal shaving cream full of oat milk, shea butter, and honey for soothing irritation and redness on sensitive skin. Good to know: oat is a fantastic protein base that helps bond moisture to the skin while still allowing it to breathe.

Kalamazoo Beard And Facial Wash

Our last recommendation for facial care is this creamy wash. It’s also made with fresh pineapple juice, which is full of enzymes to cleanse your complexion and eliminate dirt and oil. It also has almond oil, jojoba oil, and cupuaçu butter to soften and tame those facial hairs and follicles—but remember: it’s not just for people with beards.

Give dry skin a drink with ingredients like avocado, aloe vera and rose petal infusion found in Skin Drink Moisturizer.

All bodies are beautiful

Hormonal transition is quite literally another puberty. That means unwanted sweat can lead to unwanted odors from bacteria and even rashes or scarring. Plus, these hormones can lead to fat redistribution and some changes in bone and cartilage structures. These changes are enough to put a lot of stress on anyone's body, so you want to look for products and ingredients that will keep you fresh and clean.

Soaps and Shower Gels

The shower is a perfect time to play with scents and textures. Refreshing Outback Mate or Dirty Springwash can instantly refresh and revive, while Honey I Washed The Kids or Sleepy can soothe and relax the mind and body. Whichever you choose, Lush is full to the brim with infusions, herbs, essential oils, and other beneficial ingredients to boost the benefits in any shower.

Co-Mingle Body Scrub

While transitioning, skin can get thinner and produce less melanin, so the softening cocoa and shea butters in this three-in-one scrub work to create a great natural protective barrier. Co-Mingle is a body wash, shower jelly, and body conditioner in one which makes it perfect if you’re in a rush but want a product that leaves you fresh, clean, and hydrated.

Magic Crystals Shower Scrub

If you like peppermint, spearmint, rosemary and all those fresh and magical ingredients, this is just the ticket and will aid with those summer hot flashes. Magic Crystals helps remove dead skin cells and provides a much-deserved and needed relaxation for the body. The rosemary, sage, and Epsom salt combination is great for soothing tired muscles while sloughing away rough, flaky skin.

Dream Cream Body Lotion

At this point, your skin is loaded with beneficial ingredients, but sealing in those benefits with a moisturizer is essential so they can continue to work their magic. This relaxing oat milk concoction is packed with soothing essential oils of rose, lavender, and chamomile with a touch of tea tree oil to keep troubled skin balanced.

Silky Underwear Dusting Powder

Extra body sweat due to hormonal treatments can sometimes lead to acne, rashes, and scarring. Dusting powders are an easy way to ensure your skin receives optimal moisturization while keeping water from forming on the surface. This is where Silky Underwear comes through. You don't need much; it comes in small packaging; and smells very neutral, clean and fabulous! Its cornstarch and kaolin base will absorb moisture to keep you smooth as tiny shavings of cocoa butter nourish skin with a velvety touch.

Your hair your way

When we talk about hair in transition, many different and personal factors begin to play into the creation of a routine, such as hair type and porosity. Two of the most common concerns in the trans community surrounding hair are hair loss and exploring your identity through hair. Plus, regardless of hormones, hair thinning is a common issue for all kinds of people. So, to keep it simple and healthy, you want to focus on ingredients like beer, rosewood, castor oil, henna and wheatgerm.

Fairly Traded Honey Shampoo

This shampoo is made with (you guessed it!) beautifully humectant fairly-traded honey. In fact, honey makes up about 50 percent of the total formula, another 20 percent coming from hydrating linseed mucilage. The result? A shampoo that will get your scalp clean as a whistle while still locking in hydration, and making it perfect for just about every head of hair.

Once you shampoo your hair, it is good to follow up with a conditioner—and for folks in transition, it is important that you also condition your scalp just like you moisturize your body and face. For this, it is best to find natural products that will nurture your skin without debilitating the follicles.

Veganese Conditioner

With this light, bright vegan hair conditioner, seaweed nourishes and hydrates the hair from within, promoting the hair’s overall health. Rosemary and lavender are added to soothe and balance the scalp and keep it clean and happy.

Hair Treatments

Now, when it comes to giving your hair a royal treatment, you don't want to miss this hidden gem. Jasmine And Henna is a conditioning and strengthening powerhouse. Henna is a moisturizing agent and it is not just used for coloring hair. In fact, when used correctly and paired with castor oil and wheatgerm oil, it’s a great way to treat your hair to the 'sun and water' it needs to grow, and the conditioning strength to almost reset the hair without sticking your head in a bucket of oil.

But if you’re seeking added volume, great hair starts at the roots with Roots. Stimulating peppermint oil gives a reviving tingle on the scalp, encouraging healthy hair growth. This was made for fine, thin hair, but anyone can benefit from a root boost and deliciously smooth strands.

Transition is a word that will mean something different to everyone who experiences it. It will be a time of discovery and sometimes will feel scary and unknown. These are just recommendations, but the key is truly learning about these wonderful ingredients and how they can benefit your life and unique experience. We are thinking about you, we care about you, and we hope that you are all safe.
